봄부터 가을까지 잎 가장자리에 발달하는 밝은 노랑 무늬가 매력적이며 잎이 진 후 드러나는 빨간 줄기도 아름답다. 겨울정원, 무늬원 등의 테마정원에 잘 어울린다.

온대, 록키산맥 등지에 약 45종이 분포하며 반상록/낙엽, 여러해살이풀, 관목, 교목으로 자란다. 잎은 대부분 마주나지만 간혹 어긋나는 종도 있으며 작은 별모양의 꽃이 모여피는 점이 특징이다.
